Are you tired of being tired? Getting adequate amounts of sleep is one of the most important things we can do for our health. Optimizing sleep helps to improve mood, attention and focus, energy, immune function, lowers stress, regulates hormones, aids in weight management and loss, reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, and improves overall health and well-being.
Naturopathic care to support sleep involves a thorough assessment of your diet and lifestyle habits, individualized bloodwork assessing hormones and screening for vitamin deficiencies, reviewing stress levels, sleep habits, etc. Strategies to help improve sleep include but are not limited to nutritional and lifestyle counselling (including physical activity), botanical medicine, therapeutic supplementation, acupuncture, reducing stress, etc
Most adults that are healthy need about 7-9 hours of sleep a night.
The optimal time for sleep is between 9-11pm. Aiming to go to sleep between 9-11pm helps to align your sleep with your body’s natural circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm is influenced by light and darkness, and by falling asleep within a few hours of darkness and waking up within the first few hours of light helps to achieve better quality sleep.
Common causes of sleep issues include stress, poor sleep habits, anxiety, depression, substance use (excessive caffeine or alcohol, etc), medications, shift work, hormonal imbalances, menopause, medical conditions (sleep apnea, chronic pain, restless legs, asthma or other respiratory issues to name a few), etc.
